I have a confession: I am a backseat driver
And I think backseat drivers get a bad rap! In general, they are known for those people who constantly bark out orders despite being disengaged from the road. They always think that their way is the best way and criticize every move the driver makes. All of this usually done in some vain attempt to gain control of what's happening in the driver's seat, which is virtually impossible. I'm not one of THOSE types of backseat drivers, I'm a good one.
Good backseat drivers are an invaluable partner to the one in control. They know that there can only be one driver at a time; however, they understand that they can still influence from the passenger side. They know the road as well as the driver and can anticipate the driver's anxieties. This type of backseat driver does not suffer from passenger negligence and is engaged for the entire ride. If I worked for the DMV, I would create a Rider's Manual to accompany any instruction for the driver.
On that note, if I was a publisher I'd throw in a Follower's Manual to accompany every Leadership Manual Book I sold. After all, there's only room for one person behind the wheel...
